etrachlorethylene, also known as the systematic name tetrachloroethene, or perchlorethylene ("perc" or "PERC"), and many other names, is chlorocarbon with the formula Cl2C = CCl2. This is a colorless liquid that is widely used for dry cleaning fabrics, therefore it is sometimes called "dry-cleaning liquid". It has a sweet smell that can be detected by most people at a concentration of 1 part per million (1 ppm). World production was around 1 million metric tons (980,000 tons long; 1,100,000 short tons) in 1985.
