Isopropyl alcohol (name IUPAC propan-2-ol; commonly called isopropanol or 2-propanol) is a compound with the chemical formula CH3CHOHCH3 [8]. This is a colorless and flammable chemical compound with a strong odor. As an isopropyl group associated with a hydroxyl group, it is the simplest example of secondary alcohol, where carbon alcohol atoms attach to two other carbon atoms. These are structural isomers of 1-propanol and ethyl methyl ether.
It is used in the manufacture of various industrial and household chemicals, and is a common ingredient in chemicals such as antiseptics, disinfectants, and detergents.
